Portulaca grandiflora is a species of succulent, small, branched and fast growing plant in the family Portulacaceae. The name ten o’clock is because its flowers usually only bloom from about 8/9 am to 10 am during the day. It is a herbaceous plant, about 10–15 cm tall. Leaves are slightly flattened, 1.5–2 cm long, edge whole, stem pale pink, leaves pale green.
This plant is native to South America, but is widely cultivated in temperate regions because it grows so well in this region. The plant is also used as an annual garden bed. The flowers grow close to the ground and are very colorful, with colors that can be red, orange, pink, white or yellow.
According to the journal Birds & Blooms, June 2006 “it was introduced into the gardens of Europe about 300 years ago…rapidly gaining popularity for its medicinal properties, including including reducing the sound of teeth grinding, muscle spasms and soothing gunpowder burns.
